Background: NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a central metabolic coenzyme found in all living cells. It is often called the “power currency” of the cell because it is crucial for redox reactions – cycling between NAD+ (oxidized form) and NADH (reduced form) to shuttle electrons during metabolism. Beyond its classical role in energy production (think glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and mitochondrial ATP generation), NAD+ is also a substrate for key signaling enzymes like sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38, which regulate aging, DNA repair, and calcium signaling. Cellular NAD+ levels decline with age and stress, which has been hypothesized to contribute to age-related functional decline. Restoring NAD+ levels has thus become a major focus in anti-aging and metabolic research.
