Background: L-Carnitine plays a crucial role in energy metabolism by shuttling long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix for β-oxidation (fat breakdown) and ATP production. It also helps export excess acetyl-CoA out of mitochondria, thus buffering cellular energy balance. In research, L-carnitine is used to explore fatty acid oxidation pathways, metabolic disorders, and muscle physiology. For example, studies on metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease have shown that carnitine supplementation can enhance mitochondrial fat utilization and reduce lipid accumulation in tissues. Because it is a “conditionally essential” nutrient (required more under stress or high-fat conditions), L-carnitine is investigated for its potential to improve endurance, support cardiac and skeletal muscle energy usage, and protect against metabolic stress. All experiments are conducted in vitro or in animal models to elucidate L-carnitine’s biochemical effects, without implying any therapeutic use in humans.
